Welcome to My Kitchen!

Hello and welcome to True Taste Buds! I am Jessica Reynolds, the recipe developer, head chef, and lead dishwasher behind this little culinary corner of the internet.
If you are looking for meals that pack a massive punch of flavor without requiring a culinary degree or a kitchen staff, you have found exactly the right place.
I live in the heart of Arlington, Texas, where the summers are scorching, the sweet tea is always flowing, and the food scene is an incredible melting pot of bold flavors.
True Taste Buds is my passion project. It is a space where I share my absolute love for bringing people together over a steaming, delicious plate of homemade food.
My Story and Education
You might be wondering how True Taste Buds came to be. Believe it or not, I did not start my career anywhere near a professional kitchen.
I grew up right here in Texas with a family that always valued Sunday dinners, but my academic sights were set on design. I attended Texas A&M University, where I earned my bachelor degree in Landscape Architecture.
College was an amazing time for me, mostly because it is where I met my incredible husband, Dave. We were paired up for a campus charity event, and the rest is history. We got married just a few months after graduation and settled down in Arlington to start our lives together.

For nearly a decade, I worked full time as a landscape architect. I spent my days designing intricate garden layouts, choosing drought resistant plants, and mapping out public parks for the city.
I loved the creativity of my job, but it was often incredibly stressful and chaotic. Managing contractors and city zoning laws took a toll on my energy.
At the end of a long day of dealing with soil types and blueprints, my true sanctuary was my kitchen. I would come home, turn on some classic country music, pour a glass of iced tea, and start chopping.
Cooking became my ultimate stress relief. I traded my architectural drafting tools for recipe cards and found that designing a beautiful, balanced plate of food brought me infinitely more joy than designing a flowerbed.
The Birth of True Taste Buds
The exact lightbulb moment for this blog happened during a massive thunderstorm in the spring of 2025. The power flickered, the rain was pouring, and I was determined to make a cozy meal using only what I had in the pantry and my trusty gas stove.

I ended up creating a smoky roasted red pepper and sweet potato chili that my family absolutely devoured.
Sitting at the dining table that night, listening to the rain and watching my family scrape their bowls clean, I realized I wanted to document my kitchen experiments. I wanted to help other busy people create magic out of basic pantry staples.
I had no desire to turn it into a high pressure corporate business. I just wanted a creative outlet to share my love of food. That very night, True Taste Buds was born.
Meet the Taste Testers
Every recipe you see on this website has to pass a rigorous, sometimes brutal, testing panel. That panel consists of my beloved and very opinionated family.
First, there is my husband, Dave. Dave is a high school football coach and a self proclaimed barbecue connoisseur. He firmly believes that almost every meal can be improved with a generous dash of hot sauce or a heavy sprinkle of smoked paprika. If a recipe gets the Dave Nod of Approval, I know it is a guaranteed winner.
Then there are my ten year old twins, Leo and Mia. They are exact opposites in every conceivable way, especially when it comes to food. Leo is my adventurous eater who will happily sample spicy curries and exotic fruits. Mia, on the other hand, is currently going through a phase where she prefers foods that are beige and covered in melted cheese. My greatest culinary triumph is creating recipes that manage to satisfy both of them at the exact same time.
Finally, we have Barnaby. Barnaby is our rescue Basset Hound and the hardest working member of the True Taste Buds team. He serves as the official kitchen floor vacuum. He is always waiting patiently for a dropped carrot, a stray piece of shredded cheese, or the occasional catastrophic meatball spill.
My Food Philosophy

Cooking should be fun, accessible, and above all, deeply flavorful. My philosophy is very simple. I believe in fast meals for busy weeknights, creative twists on classic comfort foods, and clever shortcuts that never sacrifice taste.
I do not believe you need to spend three hours in the kitchen to make a meal that will knock your family socks off. I will show you how to get gourmet flavors out of budget friendly ingredients. We use a lot of fresh produce, lean proteins, and an embarrassingly large collection of spices. I love blending the bold, spicy elements of Tex Mex cuisine with the cozy, homestyle cooking techniques I learned from my grandmother.
Speaking of my grandmother, her heavy, beautifully seasoned cast iron skillet is the crown jewel of my kitchen. I affectionately call the skillet Bessie. You will see Bessie featured in a lot of my recipes because a good cast iron sear simply cannot be beaten.
What You Will Find on True Taste Buds
I have designed this blog to be your ultimate kitchen resource. Here is a taste of what you can expect to find as you explore the site:
- Weeknight Wonders: These are my bread and butter. You will find dozens of meals that take thirty minutes or less from cutting board to table.
- Texas Comfort: Living in Arlington means I am deeply inspired by Southern cooking. Expect to see plenty of brisket tacos, spicy queso dips, loaded cornbread, and smoky grilled meats.
- One Pan Miracles: Because nobody actually enjoys doing the dishes. I have a whole section dedicated to sheet pan meals, one pot pastas, and slow cooker feasts.
- Weekend Projects: For those rainy Sundays when you actually want to spend a few hours simmering a rich bolognese sauce or baking a beautiful layered cake from scratch.
- Pantry Staples: I love teaching people how to make their own taco seasonings, salad dressings, and barbecue sauces to save money and cut down on artificial preservatives.
What You Will NOT Find Here
I promise to always keep things real with you. Therefore, you will never find snooty culinary attitudes or judgment on this blog.
You will not find recipes that require you to visit three different specialty grocery stores just to find one obscure ingredient. You will not find overly complicated chef techniques that require liquid nitrogen or perfectly precise temperatures. And you will certainly never find food that looks beautiful for the camera but tastes absolutely bland in real life. I will take an ugly, messy, delicious plate of food over a perfectly styled, tasteless dish any day of the week.
The Arlington Influence
I draw so much inspiration from my community here in Texas. On Saturday mornings, you can usually find Dave, the twins, and me wandering through the local Arlington farmers markets. I love chatting with local growers, picking up fresh jalapenos, sweet Texas onions, and vibrant heirloom tomatoes.
Traveling is also a huge passion of mine. Whether it is a family road trip across the American Southwest or a romantic getaway to Florence, I am always taking notes. I love bringing global flavor profiles back to my Texas kitchen and adapting them to work with everyday supermarket ingredients.
Let’s Connect in the Kitchen!
My absolute favorite part of running True Taste Buds is connecting with you. I love hearing how a recipe turned out for your family or how you tweaked a dish to make it your own. Food is meant to be shared, and this blog is my way of sharing a virtual meal with you.
Please do not be a stranger! You can leave a comment on any of the recipes, and I will always do my absolute best to reply. You can also send me an email directly at jessicatastebuds@gmail.com if you have a specific cooking question, a recipe request, or just want to swap pictures of our dogs.
Grab an apron, sharpen your favorite knife, and let us get cooking!
With love and lots of garlic,
Jessica
